Abstract:The alterations of cytokines (TNF, PGE2), plasma lipopolysaccharide andtheir prognostic influences in 58 patients with intra-abdominal infection were observed with enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and radioimmunoassay (RIA). The result revealed earlier improvement of abnormal values of parameters, faster reduction of the level of and detectable rate of serum tumor necrosis factor, higher endotoxin detoxication rate and lower morbidity in the treated group than in the control. The theoretical basis of pharmacological effect and possible mechanism were explored.

Abstract:The authors determined both the numbers of T lymphocyte subpopulations in peripheral blood and the concentration of C-peptide in serum before experimentation at 15 days, 1 month, 6 months, and 1 year after islet transplantation in tripterygii totorum (T II) group in which 30 insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) patients were given T II and the control group in which 24 IDDM patients did not use any immunosuppressive agents, and 20 healthy individuals were used as the healthy group. Results: Before transplantation, the numbers of T lymphocyte subpopulations such as CD2, CD4 in the two groups were lower than those in the healthy group (P<0.01); the ratio of CD4/CD8 was between 1.2 and 2.0. After transplantation the numbers of CD2, CD4 in the two groups were elevated, particulary in T II group the numbers of CD2, CD4 were close to those in the healthy group (P>0.05). The ratio of CD4/CD8 in the control group was more than 2.0. The average dose of insulin reduced by 84.2% in 19 patients of the T II group, 2 cases stopped insulin; the peak value of C-peptide was 3.24±1.2 ng/ml. In the control group the average dose of insulin and the peak value of C- peptide was similar to that in the T II group in the first 6 months after transplantation (P>0.05), then the dose of insulin was gradually increased and the concentration of C-peptide began decreasing. One year after transplantation both the dose of insulin and the concentration of C-peptide were close to those before transplantation. The study suggests that T II have immunosuppressive effects in islet transplantation and prolong the survival time of grafts in IDDM patients.

Abstract:Transcatheter arterial embolization with hydroxycamptothecine, cantharidin and cisplatin, thoroughly mixed with large doses of interferon and interleukin-2, was performed in 48 cases with unresectable intermediate or advanced hepatocellular carcinoma. The results demonstrate a partial remission rate of 54.2%, significantly higher than that in embolization with chemotherapeutic agents alone (cisplatin, adriamycin and mitomycin, 32.1%,P<0.01). Morever, the adverse reactions of hydroxycamptothecine and cantharidin, when applied systemically, including hematuria or urodynia were successfully eliminated.

Abstract:In the treatment of 20 patients with advanced hepatocarcinoma, whose conditions worsened after chemotherapy, with hepatic artery intubation, by injection of Compound Salvia Miltiorrhiza through the hepatic artery, it can be seen that their signs were relaxed and tumor masses were diminished and biochemical indices were improved. The test group had a 65% rate of general efficiency, while the control group had only 25%. There is a significant difference (P<0.01) between the two groups. Therefore the method of treatment for such patients is thought to be worthy of being further studied.

Abstract:Eighty elderly men with symptoms of senility due to deficiency syndrome of the Kidney, but otherwise healthy, were randomly divided into two groups: one group was treated with Wuzi Yanzong Solution (WXYZS) and the other with a placebo, each for five weeks. After treatment, the symptoms of senility were ameliorated as judged by using a scoring method, the activity of the erythrocyte superoxide dismutase was increased, the plasma lipid peroxide content was reduced, the plasma testosterone level was raised and the plasma estradiol/testosterone ratio was decreased in the WZYZS group, while no changes were noticed in the placebo group. The results suggest that WZYS retard senility in the aged, probably through its action of eliminating free radicals, reducing plasma lipid peroxide levels, elevating erythrocyte superoxide dismutase activity and regulating sex hormone levels.

Abstract:Chronic renal failure patients (as test group) under treatment by Baoyuan Dahuang Decoction, other 20 cases (as control group) by western medicine, mainly coated aldehyde oxystain, had commonly blood urea nitrogen and creatinine decreased. But among the test group, the hemoglobin increased obviously, the symptons of fatigue, lassitude in loin and legs, lack of appetite, sexual disorder, and mental depression improved markedly (P<0.01), and estradiol, progesterone, testosterone as well as creatine phosphokinase were regulated notably compared with before treatment (P<0.01). Whereas in the control group, the symptoms were not significantly improved, hemoglobin, levels of sex hormones and creatine phosphokinase differed slightly. It is concluded that Baoyuan Dahuang Decoction possesses efficacy to improve chronic renal failure patients’ vitality and ability, the mechanism of which is related to anemia rectification and membrane function.

Abstract:This study deals with the data of Tripterygium Wilfordii polyglucoside (1 mg/kg·day) combined with Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae (6∼15 g/d) in the treatment of purpuric nephritis, compared with a control group using Tripterygium Wilfordii polyglucoside treatment only. The average time of edema-disappearance and blood pressure-resumption to a normal range were 8.72±3.07 and 7.44±5.17 days in the test group, which was much better than in the control group (P<0.05). The average time of hematuria-disappearance in the test group and the control group were 36.37±11.50 and 47.73±14.03 days respectively. The average time for C3 levels in the urine to resume to normal in the test group and the control group were 40.33±4.51 and 50.00±5.30 days respectively (P<0.01). The time for microcirculation of nail fold to return to normal after treatment in the test group and the control group were 39.00±11.03 and 66.00±9.01 days respectively (P<0.001). These results indicate the effect on the test group was much better than that on the control group.

Abstract:The study has collected a set of clinical materials such as extension-flexion dynamic lumbar spine radiographs and computerized x-ray tomography of lumbar spine and quantified physical examination from 32 patients with lumbar intervertebral disc herniation, who had gone through a successful conservative treatment. The collection was conducted twice before and after the treatment. With the help of t-test and linear correlation analysis, the study suggests that extension-flexion radiograph of lumbar spine is of important clinical significance in weighing the clinical state of an individual patient, especially for those who receive conservative treatment. The study emphasizes that the biomechanical disturbance of lumbar spinal column may be from another important pathological element along with the irritation of the nerve root by herniated disc tissue in the pathomechanics of lumbar disc herniation. There is also some discussion of the computerized X-ray tomography diagnosis in this study. Above all, the author provides a new angle of viewing the trouble by one of the soul principles of traditional Chinese medicine: concept of holistics.

Abstract:This study used the radioimmunoassay method to observe 11 cases of prolapsed intervertebral disc and to detect the change of cAMP and cGMP in the cerebrospinal fluid before and after finger pressing manipulation in acupuncture point Weizhong (UB 40) and Chengshan (UB 57) in order to discuss the mechanism of analgesia of finger pressing manipulation. The results show the pain was relieved after finger pressing manipulation. cGMP of the cerebrospinal fluid increased from 0.51±0.19 to 0.63±0.13 pm/ml, in average 32% higher than before the treatment (P<0.05). Since cAMP/cGMP decreased from 30.52±26.42 to 23.20±16.91. this shows the analgesic mechanism of finger pressing manipulation might be due to the fact that the therapy excited the selectively endogenous analgesic system, caused the increased release of endorphin, and was accompanied by regulation of cAMP and cGMP.

Abstract:The experiments were applied on 66 rabbits. While massage was applied on six acupoints, such as Heyang (UB 55), Xiguan (Liv 7), and others on legs with the manipulations of finger pressure and finger kneading, the massage-evoked potentiogram on the nerve cutaneus posterior femoralis and the nerve gastrocnemius medialis were obtained. The massage-evoked potentiogram synchronized with massage evoked impulses and varied with different manipulations. All four groups of afferent fibers contained in nerve cutaneous posterior femoralis and nerve gastrocnemius medialis were involved in conducting the impulses caused by the two manipulations. These results indicate that the massage manipulations have regular influence on the activities of both the sensitive tissues in acupoints and the somatic afferent nerves. Therefore, the results will scientifically enrich the application of massotherapy as far as manipulations are concerned. Furthermore, the results suggest vast vistas for the systematical study of the mechanism of massage from the neurobiological view-point.

Abstract:Chengqi mixture (CM) is a Chinese herbal mixture valuable in treating acute peritonitis. The anti-inflammatory action of Chengqi mixture was investigated on the synthesis of leukotriene B4 (LTB4) and 5-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (5-HETE) of peritoneal macrophages in rats. These mediators were determined by Reverse Phase-High Performance Liquid Chromatography. The ultraviolet absorbance of LTB4 was 280 nm, and of 5-HETE was 235 nm. The results indicated different concentrations of CM significantly inhibited the synthesis of LTB4 compared with the control (P<0.01, n=16) and were dose dependent from 0.15 to 10 g/L. The inhibitory rate of CM for the LTB4 exceeded 95% and for 5-HETE was about 70% at the dose of 5 g/L. The inhibitory rate of CM was equal to that of the flufenamic acid group in which the final concentration was at 10−4M. The half inhibitory rates (IC50) of CM for LTB4 and that for 5-HETE were 0.8 g/L and 1.1 g/L respectively. It is suggested that the anti-inflammatory actions of CM was related to the inhibition of synthesis of LTB4 and 5-HETE from arachidonic acid via 5-lipoxygenase in macrophages.

Abstract:Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) model of rabbits was made by the injection of endotoxin. Cytochrome P-450 content and aniline hydroxylase activity in hepatocytic microsomes in DIC rabbits were significantly reduced. The microviscosity of mitochondrial membrane was elevated, while the fluidity of the membrane, and the activities of calcium-magnesium-adenosine triphosphatase and calcium-adenosine triphosphatase were reduced. Lipid peroxide and xanthine oxidase activities were increased, while superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities were significantly decreased (P<0.05 or <0.01). The changes in the Reduqing test group were not prominent, and the parameters of the test group were close to those of the control group. This study suggests that in endotoxin induced DIC rabbits the hepatocytic microsomes are injured, calcium homeostasis is disturbed and oxygen free radicals are notably accumulated. Whereas Reduqing may have a protective effect on hepatocytic microsomes from the injury, maintain calcium homeostasis and reduce oxygen free radicals in DIC rabbits.

Abstract:The protective effects for hepatocytes ofSalviae miltiorrhiza andPaeonia lactiflora in experimental rat models of liver damage were observed. Pathological changes in light and electron micro-scopies and plasma fibronectin level alterations of liver injury in rats, revealed thatSalviae miltiorrhiza could induce the increase of plasma fibronectin level in rats, thus improved phagocytosis of the reticuloendothelial system and opsonin activity, preventing the liver from immunologic damage, protecting hepatocytes and promoting regeneration. Similar but weaker actions were observed inPaeoniae lactiflora.
