Abstract:TCM represents the enormous accumulation of daily experiences in medical practice by the Chinese people from ancient time. The description of the therapeutic usage in classic books of Chinese materia medica are informative even today, for example, Angelica sinensis ameliorates menstruation disorder and Artemisia annua is effective against malaria. All these therapeutic effects have been confirmed by contemporary scientific research. Chemical, pharmacological and clinical studies published in recent years have demonstrated that Chinese materia medica and TCM afford a valuable approach for the research and development of new antineoplastic drugs as illustrated by the example of indirubin from Danggui Longhui Wan and irisquinone from Iris latea. It seems that there is a good opportunity to explore chemopreventive agents for cancer as illustrated by red ginseng, Curcuma longa and Recipe “Antitumor B”. The research and development of anti-invasion and anti-metastasis agents for cancer is of critical importance and urgent needs. In addition to Fagopyrum cymosum the continuous search for drugs for the prevention and treatment of cancer metastasis will be the important frontier of cancer research. The application of Chemotaxonomic principle of related species of plants in reference of the experiences of TCM and folk medicine has furnished an alternative approach for the development of new anticancer drugs. The studies of Cephalotaxus hainanensis and Taxus chinensis provide two typical examples in this field.

Abstract:The clinical efficacy obtained from 211 cases of middle and late stage lung cancer treated by electrochemical therapy (ECT) were summarized. The responses are divided into CR, PR, NR, PD according to the international standard of four grades. The short term effectiveness within one year was: CR (29.4%) and PR (40.3%) were assessed as the total effective rate being 69.7%, NR (13.3%) and PD (17.1%) were assessed as ineffective. The efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) group was 54.3%; that of ECT group was 70.4%; while that of TCM combined with Western medicine group (ECT+TCM) was 84.3%. The efficacy of ECT+TCM group was superior to the formerr two groups (P<0.05). The 5 years long term effectiveness of ECT group was 31.0%, TCM group 15.7%, ECT+TCM group 40.0%. Clinical analysis showed that the effect of ECT+TCM group was the best.

Abstract:Serum interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R) level, activities of natural killer cell (NK) and lymphokine activated killer (LAK) cells were determined in 60 patients with advanced carcinoma (AC) before and after treatment with Shenmai Injection (SMI), forty healthy persons were taken as non-carcinoma control (NC). The results showed that: Serum sIL-2R level in AC were much higher than those in NC (P<0.05) and activities of NK and LAK cells in AC were much lower than those in NC (P<0.05) before treatment. There was no significant difference among gastric, colonic and lung cancer (P>0.05). After treatment with SMI, it was found that the level of sIL-2R in all patients were obviously lowered (P<0.05) while the activities of NK and LAK cells were signifficantly higher than that prior the treatment (P<0.05). Relevancy was not found between sIL-2R and NK, LAK cells. These data suggested that the immune function was compromised in AC, and SMI has a wide effect of immuno-regulation.

Abstract:In order to investigate the mechanism of Nei-Yi Recipe (NYR) in treatment of endometriosis, the changes of plasma β-endorphin (β-EP) level in women with endometriosis treated by NYR were observed. It was found that in luteal phase β-EP concentrations in plasma were significantly reduced in moderate and severe dysmenorrhea groups compared with mild and control groups. Moreover, β-EP level in severe dysmenorrhea group was lower in the luteal phase than that in the follicular phase, and it was lower in patients with pelvic pain than that without it. In normal women, the β-EP level in plasma were not changed during menstrual cycle. It was also found that plasma β-EP levels were significantly increased in luteal phase and follicular phase after treatment by NYR. The therapeutical mechanism of NYR on dysmenorrhea and pelvic pain and the immunoenhancing function might be mediated by increase of plasma β-EP levels.

Abstract:According to the microcosmic Syndrome Differentiation, immunological infertility is recognised as Kidney Yin Deficiency-Hyperactivity of Fire Syndrome. Zhibai Dihuang Pills , a recipe of Chinese medicinal herbs which plays a nourishing Yin to remove Fire action, was used to treat the infertile couples with antisperm and/or antizona pellucida antibodies in their blood serum. It was found that after the treatment, the antibodies were converted to negativeness in 81.3% of 32 immunological infertile couples. All 8 cases of successful pregnancy occurred in 1∼9 months after negative conversion of the antibodies and the negative status was maintained throughout the course of pregnancy.

Abstract:In order to study the effects of Herba Dracocephali (HD) in treating coronary heart disease (CHD) and antiperoxidative damage, 40 patients of CHD were treated with HD and the changes of plasma superoxide dismutase (SOD), lipid peroxide (LPO), thromboxane B2 (TXB2) and 6-keto-prostaglandin F1α(6-keto-PGF1α) as well as platelet LPO (PL-LPO), SOD (PL-SOD) and selenium-glutathion peroxidase (SGP) were measured before and after treatment. Results showed that TXB2, LPO and PL-LPO increased, while SOD, PL-SOD decreased significantly in patients. After treatment by HD, the TXB2, LPO, PL-LPO lowered and 6-keto-PGF1α, SOD, PL-SOD and SGP elevated obviously. Electron microscopy showed that the ultrastructure of platelets improved and the activity of adenylate cyclase increased markedly. The results suggested that HD is a traditional Chinese herbal antioxidant and is hopeful for treating CHD.

Abstract:Clinical and laboratory criteria were observed in 82 patients of hyperthyroidism treated with integrated Chinese medicine. Results showed that patients were recovered more rapid than the control group which were treated with Western medicine only. The serum free triiodothyronine, free tyroxin, total thyroxin, total triiodothyronine and reverse antitriiodothyronine of patients all went up beyond the normal range before treatment. After treatment, the number of patients with these abnormal criteria normalized in integrated therapy group was much greater than that in the control group.

Abstract:The effect of Xue Guan Tong (XGT) granule in preventing restenosis of atherosclerotic iliac artery after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) in rabbits was studied. Forty-two purebred New Zealand rabbits with their endothelium of iliac arteries denuded and fed with high cholesterol diet for six weeks to form the model of atherosclerotic stenosis. After PTA, the high cholesterol diet was stopped immediately and they were divided into 3 groups randomly, the XGT group, the lovastatin group and the control group. Arterial angiograph and pathological observation were carried out 4 weeks after PTA. The results showed that (1) The luminal diameter of artery was 1.82±0.46mm in the XGT group, 0.96±0.71mm in the lovastatin group and 0.71±0.53mm in the control group. The former one was larger than the latter two significantly (P<0.01). (2) Thickness of intima of artery was 0.27±0.40mm in the XGT group, it was thinner than those in the other two groups (0.43±0.04mm in the lovastatin group and 0.48±0.10mm in the control group). (3) In XGT group, the smooth muscle cells (SMCs) contained fewer organelles, more muscular fibers and were well differentiated than in the other two groups. The conclusion was XGT has the preventive effect on post-PTA arterial restenosis in rabbits.

Abstract:Using the model of acute myocardial ischemia in rats formed by ligation of the descending anterior branch of the left coronary artery, this study showed some effects of compound Salviae miltiorrhizae injection (CSMI) on metabolism of phosphoinositide in myocardial ischemia. The results of the experiment showed that after 10 minutes of acute ischemia, the function of myocardial messangers of phosphoinositide increased, and the levels of phosphatidylinositol-4, 5-biphosphate (PIP2) and inositol-1, 4, 5-trisphosphate (IP3) were obviously higher than those of the non-ischemia control groups (P<0.01, n=7). CSMI (2 g/kg body weight) could markedly inhibit myocardial PIP2 and IP3, whose levels became lower than those of the ischemia control groups (P<0.01, n=7).

Abstract:Treated the experimental acute liver injury rat induced by D-galactosamine with magnesium lithosperamate-B could significantly lower the serum activity of alanine transaminase and aspartate aminotransferase, relieve the necrosis of hepatocytes and elevate the levels of products of arachidonic acid (6-ke-to-prostaglandin 1α, prostaglandin D2 and the total prostaglandin) in liver. These results suggested that magnesium lithosperamate B was one of the main components ofSalvia miltiorrzae in treating liver injury, the action on elevating the total prostaglandin in liver might be its mechanism.

Abstract:Thirty rats were divided into three groups: Damp group (relative humidity was over 90% and temperature 18∼25°C), Cold group (T:2±2°C, RH:54±4%) and normal control group (T:18∼25°C, RH: 54±4%). The results showed that number of Escherichia coli increased greatly while number of bifidobacterium reduced in high moisture. In Damp group, level of secretory IgA was much higher as compared with that of the normal controlled and Cold group. Th/i and Ts/c in Cold group and in Damp group were slightly lower than that in the normal group. Light microscopic examinations showed that there were infiltration of inflammatory cells and low-grade hyperemia in the phalangeal joints’ synovium of rats of the Damp group in pathological section. Meanwhile there were low-grade erosion, degeneration, necrosis and exfoliation in epithelium mucosa of small intestine.
