Abstract:In order to study the effect of a traditional Chinese medical treating method (Strengthening Body Resistance Method) on asthma attack, asthmatic patients of either Cold type or Heat type were divided into two groups and treated with the Chinese methods “Zhibiao” (symptomatic treatments, as the control group) and “Biaoben Jianzhi” (treating both the secondary and principal aspects of a disease, as the test group) respectively. The results showed that the markedly effective rates were higher in the two “Biaoben Jianzhi” groups than that in the two “Zhibiao” groups. After treatment, the changes of one second forced expiratory volume (FEV1) and the peak expiratory flow of patients of the former were also greater than those of the latter; the proportion of cells carrying human leukocyte antigen class II (HLA-DR+ cell), the basophilic cell releasing capacity (HBR) and the T cell hyperplasia response to specific allergens of patients of the “Biaoben Jianzhi” groups were all reduced while those of the “Zhibiao” groups changed little. These results suggested that the “Strengthening Body Resistance method” played an important role in regulating immunity for relieving asthma attack.

Abstract:Chuanxiong Antiasthma Mixture is a prescription for bronchial asthma which we have adopted in the clinic for many years. The results of the animal experiment showed that it has the function of relaxing the isolated bronchial smooth muscle spasm of the animal, lowering the experimented animal’s asthma incidence and mortality. On the basis of these results, we have expanded our clinical observation samples setting up the Chuanxiong antiasthma group: 100 cases and the control group: 50 cases. The results showed that the mixture can apparently increase the ratio of 1 second forceful expiration volume/ forceful vital capacity (FEV1 %) and reduce the value of thromboxane B2. The total effective rate is 92% which is obviously superior than the control group (P<0.05). It suggests that the mixture has the antagonistic effect toward the synthesis and release of thromboxane B2 Also it has the function of relaxing the smooth muscle and improve the pulmonary function.

Abstract:This paper reports that Glucosidorum Tripterygii Totorum(GTT), 20 mg, three times daily was used as a substitute for cortical hormone to treat corticosteroid-dependent type of aspirin-induced asthma. The results showed that the total effective rate was 100%, with 31 cases of marked effectiveness (86.11%) and 5 cases of effectiveness (13. 89%). Plasma cortisol was significantly elevated to normal level after treatment (P<0.001). Cushing’s syndrome disappeared gradually. The blood glucose in the 9 patients who were complicated with diabetes mellitus returned to normal and their glucosuria test became negative. The value of peak expiratory flow (PEF) increased to different degrees(P<0.01 for male, P<0.05 for female). The increment of PEF in the patients complicated with emphysema was not so much as in those patients not complicated with emphysema, but compared with premedication value, the elevation of PEF was significant (P<0. 05). There were no side-effects during treatment and the side-effects of cortical hormone could be avoided. Thus, the treatment proved valuable.

Abstract:Electroacupuncture(EA) has proved as effective as amitriptyline in the treatment of depression. The present article compared the therapeutic efficacy of electroacupuncture on common mental disorder and that of computer controlled electroacupuncture (CCEA) treatment of the same disease. The results showed that CCEA treatment had a better effect than EA for the treatment of single episode depression. CCEA treatment was generally superior to EA for the treatment of schizophrenia, depression and neurosis. The mechanism of CCEA for the treatment of common mental disorders was discussed.

Abstract:This study measures the depth for De-Qi at different acupoints from head, trunk, and extremities. The differences of the depth for De-Qi of subjects from fat, medium and slender groups were analyzed statistically by t-test. The results suggest that the depth for De-Qi from slender group is less deep (P<0.01) than that of the fat group. The depth for De-Qi is less deep at loci from head than that of the trunk and extremities. The standard derivation for the depth of De-Qi is ± 0.1 cm at loci from head region and ± 0.2 cm at both trunk and extremity region. The depth for De-Qi from the subjects with nervous or allergic character, in general, is less deeper than that of the normal. However the depth for De-Qi from the subjects with cancer and sequelae of cerebral vascular accident is deeper than that of the normal.

Abstract:In order to evaluate the role and mechanism of Jinshisan(JSS) in gallstone dissolution, 325 cases of various types of gallstone patients were treated by a collaborating group. The therapeutic effect was observed by B-ultrasonography before and after treatment. The results showed: (1) among the 164 cases of extra/intrahepatic duct stone, 26 cases (15.85%) were cured; 73 cases (44.51%) were effective and 65 cases (39.63 %) were ineffective after being treated with JSS for 6.5 ± 3.9 months; (2) JSS made the stone disappear in 14 cases (9.5%) among 148 cases of gallbladder stone and was effective in 71 cases with total efficacy as 57.4%, which was better in comparison with ursodesoxycholic acid (UDCA); (3) the stones all disappeared only in 2 cases (5.9%) among the 35 cases with stones in multiple sites, with the total efficacy as 79.4%; (4) gallstone disappeared in 17 of 25 (68%) patients with size of stone ≤5mm, with only 4 of them ineffective; (5) the effect was better in those with treatment course >6 months; (6) analysis of bile showed that JSS could increase the amount of bile acid, decrease the bilirubin, mucous and bicarbonate radical in bile.

Abstract:The 100 patients with fallopian tube obstruction were firstly treated by catheter recanalization, and then randomly divided into two groups: Chinese medicine group (CMG) was treated with Tongjingbao and Angelicae Complex Injection, and Western medicine group (WMG) as the control was treated with gentamycin, dexamethasone and Chotrypsin. The course of the treatment was three months and hemorheology change was analysed before and after the treatment. After the above treatment, hystero salpingography was again performed on all patients except those with subsequent pregnancy. The results showed that the effective rate of catheter recanalization was 94%, and the pregnancy rate was 30% in CMG and 16% in WMG (P<0.05). The reocclusion rate of fallopian tube was 9.3% in CMG and 29.9% in WMG (P <0.05). The difference of hemorheology change was significant between the two groups (P< 0. 01) and between before and after treatment in CMG (P< 0. 01). This study showed that catheter recanalization was effective in mechanically recanalizing the occluded fallopian tube and that the Chinese medicine used in the treatment effective in lowing the concentration of blood and thus inhibiting the reocclusion and re-adhesion of the fallopian tube.

Abstract:Adopting prospective, multi-center, random, single-blind and equal rank-control methods, 226 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were divided into two groups. The 114 patients of the test group were treated with oral sustained release tablets of Tripterygium Wilfordii (TW-SR), 2 tablets twice a day for 4 weeks, 112 patients of the control group received tablets of Tripterygium Wilfordii (TW) orally 2 tablets 3 times per day for 4 weeks. Testing results showed the total effective rates of the two groups were 92.11 % and 90.65 %, respectively (P>0.05). The adverse reaction rate of TW-SR was 20.18%, which was lower than that of TW group of 70.54% (P<0. 01). Results of pre-clinical pharmacologic experimental study demonstrated that TW-SR has obvious anti-inflammatory, analgesic and immunosuppressive actions the same as TW, while the toxicity of TW-SR was less than that of TW significantly.

Abstract:Blood flow of the extremities was measured in 33 cases of rheumatoid arthritis and 30 of healthy persons by personal vascular laboratory. It was found that the values of extremity rheography in the patients were significantly lower than that in the controls. Treated with blood-circulation-promoting and stasis-removing traditional Chinese medicine and Mailuoning Injection which has a beneficial impact on anti-coagulation, removing embolus and activating circulation, the symptoms, signs and the blood flow in the extremities of the patients with rheumatoid arthritis were markedly improved.

Abstract:After examining 88 gastropathic patients with Spleen deficiency syndrome by using transmission electron microscope, X-ray energy disperse analysis system, histochemical staining and radioimmuno methods, the authors found that the gastric mucosa cyclic adenosine monophosphate, superoxide dismutase level, quantity of mitochondria and its crista, the ratio of diameter between ventricle and cavity of mitochondria and the content of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu) of mitochondria were decreasing to certain extent which tends to get lower and lower with different groups in the order of health control group; Spleen Qi deficiency group and Spleen deficiency with Qi stagnation group; chronic superficial gastritis group, chronic atrophic gastritis group and gastric cancer group; complete small intestinal metaplasia (IM) group, incomplete small IM group, complete colonic IM group and incomplete colonic IM group (P<0.05~0.001). While the degeneration rate of mitochondria, Cu/Zn ratio, metaplasia rate of gastric mucosa, rate of incomplete colonic IM and content of lipid peroxide were increasing in the above order (P<0.05~0.001). It is suggested that the comprehensive effect of the degeneration of mitochondria and the quantitative changes of its correlative factors is the physiopathologic base for inducing Spleen deficiency disease, gastric mucosa IM and canceration.

Abstract:To test the hypothesis of Syndrome and Treatment Pharmacokinetics (S-TPK), the authors have studied the pharmacokinetics of tetramethyrazine phosphate (TMPP) in healthy and blood stasis dogs by high performance liquid chromatography. After a single intravenous injection of TMPP 8 mg kg-1 to healthy and blood stasis dogs, compartment model of TMPP serum concentration was fitted and then pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated with a Microcomputer Pharmacokinetic Program on a Compaq 80386 computer. Important parameters were as follows: in the healthy dogs, T1/2P = 30. 27 ± 6. 85 min, Kel = 0.11 ± 0. 04 min-1, AUC= 445.26±51.26 mg/L min; in the blood stasis dogs, T1/2β = 71.58β10.80 min, Kel = 0.06 β0.01 min-1, AUC = 1381.85β464.68 mg/L min. Through this experiment it was found that there was significant difference in the pharmacokinetic parameters between healthy and blood stasis dogs. The results obtained are consistent with S-TPK hypothesis.

Abstract:The effect of herbal medicine preparation Composite Donyuan Gao (CDYG) on the animal model of drug dependence was studied. After the morphinistic models of white rats and mice had been made by closes of morphine which were ever increased daily and each time, the animals were divided into large dose CDYG group, small dose CDYG group, sustained morphine group and the control group. The withdrawal symptoms were observed after naloxone was given to the animal intraperitoneally. The results showed that in the CDYG groups withdrawal symptoms of the addicted white rats were alleviated, the number of jumps of the addicted mice was reduced, the scores of the principal symptoms of the animals were decreased, while the animals gained soon in weight. Comparing with the control group, the difference was significant (P<0.01). The fact that the effect of the CDYG was enhanced in the large dose group, suggests that it was dosage dependent.

Abstract:Rubidate is a phenolic compound. The present investigation was designed to establish whether rubidate protects the heart muscle against the deleterious effects of the oxygen free radicals produced by isoproterenol (ISO)-induced myocardial ischemia in mice. ISO treatment (30 mg kg-1 subcutaneous injection once daily for 2 days) caused widespread and severe myocardial cell damage, decreased myocardial glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and increased myocardial malondialdehyde (MDA) content. Rubidate pretreatment 500 mg-kg-1, 2000 mg.kg-1×7d protected GSH-Px, SOD activity in the hearts of ISO-treated mice. Rubidate 2000 mg-kg-1 diminished MDA production. However, rubidate 500 mg.kg-1 did not show such an effect. This study demonstrated that rubidate inhibited lipid peroxidation (LPO, expressed by malondialdehyde formation), scavenged-Oz - and H2O2. It may be concluded that rubidate exhibits an antioxidative activity via scavenging free radicals.
