Abstract:Two hundred and two cases of acute respiratory tract infection (ARI) were treated with Shuanghuanglian (SHL) aerosol. In these cases, the majority were virus infection and 64% of them was caused by the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The virostatic and bacteriostatic test were done in vitro by the cell culture method and it was shown that SHL could inhibit the RSV, para-influenza virus I ~ IV and 23 kinds of pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus etc. The bacteriostatic effect was positively correlated to the SHL concentration. Experimental study showed that SHL could enhance the NK cell activity, promote the production of α-interferon and raise the rate of lymphocyte transformation. The controlled observation on SHL preparation with various dosage-forms revealed that the SHL aerosol in treating early ARI showed better results than that of injections and oral liquid symptomatologically (P<0.05). The total effective rate was 96%.

Abstract:In order to study the effect of dihydroxyacetophenone (DHAP) on pulmonary hemodynamics and its relationship to plasma atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) as well as adenosine cyclophosphates in chronic obstractive pulmonary disease (COPD), right heart catheterization was used to examine some parameters of hemodynamics in 11 COPD patients before and after the application of DHAP, and at the same time radioimmunoassay was used to measure the plasma ANP and cyclo-adenosine monophosphate/cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cAMP/cGMP). The results showed that DHAP 640 mg given intravenously could decrease mean pulmonary arterial pressure, pulmonary vascular resistance and systemic vascular resistance (P < 0.05), but increase cardiac output from 4.10 ±1.08 L/min to 5.13 ±1.19 L/min (P>0.05) and without affecting systemic arterial blood pressure (P>0. 05) as well as blood gas analysis; it could also reduce the plasma ANP and cGMP level from 0.73 ± 0.42 pg/ml to 0.41 ±0.33 pg/ml (P<0.01) and from 9.82 ±5.75 pm/ml to 8.01 ± 4.80 pm/ml(P<0.05) respectively, but did not affect the plasma cAMP level (P>0.05). It is suggested that DHAP may relax pulmonary vessels by adjusting the ratio of cAMP to cGMP, and the lowering of plasma ANP level might be a secondary reaction. So DHAP was considered a quick-acting, safe and potential drug in treating pulmonary arterial hypertension by COPD.

Abstract:Seventy-two patients of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) of Qi deficiency syndrome with abnormal immune indices were treated with Yiqi Mianyi Granule (YQMYG) and the efficacy was compared with that of 30 cases treated with Zhenqi fuzheng Granule (ZQFZG) for control. Results showed that the markedly effective rate of symptomatic improvement of Qi deficiency in YQMYG group was 65.3%, the total effective rate 93.1%. 88.6% of the immune indices lower than normal were corrected and 43. 7% of them were normalized, while for indices that were higher than normal the rate were 78.2% and 52.9% respectively. These results suggested that YQMYG could improve symptom of Qi Deficiency markedly, strengthen cellular immunity and regulate immune dysfunction. Its therapeutic efficacy was obviously superior to ZQFZG (P<0.Q5).

Abstract:The effects of Compound Salvia Injection (CSI) on plasma lipid peroxidation (LPO), RBC superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and catalase (CAT) activity in patients with chronic cor pulmonale were studied. Thirty patients were randomly divided into two groups: the group treated with routine therapy (routine group) and the group treated with routine therapy plus CSI (CSI group). The 4 parameters mentioned above have been measured in patients of the two groups and in 22 healthy subjects for control. The results showed: (1) Before treatment, both the treatment groups had significantly higher LPO and SOD and markedly lower GSH-Px and CAT level than those of the healthy control (P<0.001). (2) After treatment the 4 parameters have been normalized in CSI group. (3) In the routine group, the parameters were still abnormal, that is, the increased levels of GSH-Px and CAT and the decreased LPO were singificantly greater in CSI group than that in routine group. These results indicated that CSI could obviously lower the enhanced lipid peroxidation and adjust the imbalance of antioxidant enzymes.

Abstract:The RA mixture is composed of Tripterygium wilfordii (TW) and other Chinese medicinal herbs with effect of expelling Wind, activating blood circulation, invigorating the Kidney and Qi. The authors treated rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with RA mixture and compared it with D-Penicillamine as ocntrol. The two group’s therapeutical effect is similar (P >0.05), but side effect occuring ratio in treatment group was obviously lower than that of control group (P <0.01). After treatment with RA mixture, the patient’s human lymphocytic antigen-degenerative reaction (HLA-DR+) cell, CD4/CD8 ratio were reduced and automixed lymphocytic reaction (AMLR) level enhanced (P <0.05). The results of animal experiment showed that swelling of rheumatoid arthritis model mouse’s joint could be reduced by both RA mixture and TW. Comparing with TW, RA mixture had stronger effect in controlling the inflammation of synovial cell and fibroid degeneration of fibrocytes. At the same time, RA mixture had stronger effect in protecting immune organ from atrophy and maintaining functions of cellular immunity. All these suggest that RA mixture can reduce the syndroms of RA by improving distribution of T lymphocyte subsets and functions of cellular immunity. The Chinese medicinal herbs for reinforcing Kidney, supplementing Qi, activating blood circulation and expelling evil wind in the RA mixture could enhance TW’s therapeutical effect and reduce it’s side effect.

Abstract:The efficacy of Radix Astragali membranaceus (AM) oral liquor combined with routine therapy and routine therapy alone on T-lymphocyte subsets of peripheral blood in viral myocarditis patients have been studied comparatively. The results showed that the T-lymphocyte subsets profile and OKT4/OKT8 ratio of peripheral blood were significantly lower in viral myocarditis patients than that in healthy control (P < 0.05, 0.01). Routine therapy combined with AM could singificantly enhance OKT3, OKT4 and OKT4/OKT8 ratio in the above-mentioned patients (P <0.05, 0.01). The possible pharmacodynamic mechanism of combining routine therapy with AM in improving cell immunity in viral myocarditis patients was discussed.

Abstract:Forty-five patients suffering from angina pectoris of coronary heart disease (CHD) were successfully treated with Tianbaoning (TBN). The effect of the treatment was compared with that of nifedipine. The clinical practice showed that the group treated with TBN showed better results. After medication, the patients were markedly relieved from angina pectoris of CHD. Meanwhile the improvement of electrocardiogram (ECG) and impedance cardiogram were also observed. The effective rate of ECG improvement was 83.7%. The treatment of angina pectoris of CHD with TBN was significantly more effective compared with the control group (P<0.05).

Abstract:Sixty-eight patients suffering from diabetes mellitus (DM) type II with Kidney Deficiency and blood stasis Syndrome were enrolled and divided randomly into treatment group (34 cases) and placebo group (34 cases). The contents of serum lipid peroxide (LPO), blood lipid and blood sugar were determined. The results showed that the serum LPO in treatment group was higher than that in placebo group (P< 0.05), it increased significantly in DM patients with vascular disease or with uncontrolled blood sugar and was positively correlated with level of triglyceride (TG, r = 0. 25, P< 0. 05). After using Bushen Huoxue tablet (BSHXT) serum LPO lowered (P<0.05), blood sugar decreased (P<0.05) and high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) increased (P<0.05) in treatment group, but in placebo group these three parameters were not changed significantly. These results indicated that LPO reaction in type II DM patients increased. When the blood sugar and TG were higher or complicated with vascular disease, the LPO reaction would be enhanced more markedly. BSHXT will have a good prospect in the prevention and treatment of DM patients complicated with vascular disease.

Abstract:Sixty-three cases with stomach cancer were randomized into 2 groups and observed, the results showed that the count of T lymphocytes in chemotherapy combined with Shenmai injection (SMI) group increased, while in the control group it decreased, the difference being quite significant (P<0.05). The results also showed that the count of OKT1 cells and the OKT4/OKT8 ratio decreased after chemotherapy, but in SMI group both parameters increased in advance, which were higher in the 4th week after chemotherapy than that before chemotherapy. However in the meantime, the count of OKT1 cells and OKT4/OKT8 ratio of control group were still in low level. After chemotherapy the serum interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R) level also decreased (P<0.05), while activities of natural killer cell (NK) and lymphokine activated killer cell (LAK) level increased (P<0.05) in SMI group. But in the control group, although the sIL-2R level had no change, both NK and Lak level decreased significantly (P<0.05). In addition, the difference of IgA, IgM, IgG levels was not significant between these two groups. These results suggested that SMI might improve human immunologic function to facilitate the chemotherapy of patients with stomach cancer.

Abstract:In this immunohistochemical study, the authors detected the expression of c-myc in keratinocytes (ECK) from 30 psoriatics before and after Qingdai Compound Capsule (QDCC) treatment and 12 normal subjects for control. The results showed that the ECK of patients before treatment was significantly higher than that in the normal control group, and its level was correlated with histopathological changes of affected skin. After treatment the ECK was normalized. It is believed that QDCC could decrease the ECK in psoriatics and this effect was probably mediated by inhibiting c-myc expression. This study provided an experimental evidence for the application of QDCC in treating psoriasis.

Abstract:Twenty four male guinea-pigs were randomly divided into 3 groups: Group A, allergic asthma guinea-pigs prepared by peritoneal injection and spraying inhalation of albumin; Group B, allergic asthma guinea-pigs treated with electroacupuncture through stimulating the acupoint Feishu (UB13) and Group C, the control group. With[3H]-DHA as a radioligand, pulmonary β-adrenoceptor (β- AC) in the 3 groups of guineapigs were detrermined by radioligand binding assay technique. The results showed that: (1) The maximum binding volume of receptor ligand (Bmax, fmol/mg prot.) of pulmonary β-AC in Group A (123.86 β 42.91) was significantly lower than that in group C (199.54 β 37.03,P<0.05), while the difference between group B (142.00+42.91) and group C was not significant (P>0.05). (2) The Kd (nM) of pulmonary β-AC in group A, B and C were 5.10 β 1.39, 6.53 β 2.41 and 8.72 β 2.02 respectively, and the differences among the three groups were not significant (P>0.05). The results indicated that the decrease of the content and dysfunction of pulmonary β-AC in allergic asthma guinea-pigs might be regulated by electroacupuncture therapy.

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the effect of tetramethylpyrazine in treating bacterial meningitis. Experimental model of rabbit meningitis was induced by intracisternal inoculation of 2 x 107 colony-forming units of Escherichia Coli and tumor necrosis factor-α, thromboxane B2 and 6-keto-prostagladin F1α concentrations in cerebrospinal fluid of rabbits in different treatment groups were measured at 24 hrs, 27 hrs and 30 hrs after infection. Results showed that tetramethylpyrazine could significantly lower the concentrations of tumor necrosis factor-α and thromboxane B2 in cerebrospinal fluid. Administration of both tetramethylpyrazine and ampicillin could attenuate the antibiotic-induced rapid release of the 2 inflammatory mediators.

Abstract:By means of stimulating bilateral phrenic nerves in rabbits, the effect of Shengmai San (SMS) injection on function of normal and fatigue diaphragm was observed with the measuring of diaphragm evoked potential (DEP), and the analysis of the power spectrum of diaphragmatic electromyogram (EMGdi) at spontaneous breathing. The results were as follows: (1) After the adminstration of 2 ml/kg of SMS, amplitude of DEP, central frequency, and the high/low frequency ratio were markedly increased. (2) Injecting SMS 2 ml/kg in 30 minutes before injury could effectively get rid of diaphragmatic fatigue following electrical stimulation of the phrenic nerves. (3) Injecting SMS in 2 ml/kg after fatigue could enhance the recovery of the diaphragmatic fatigue.

Abstract:The R plasmid curing experiment was performed in vitro with E.coli strain E. 102 bearing R plasmid with multiple drug resistance as target bacteria and Rhizoma Coptidis as elimination agent, and the influence at different acting time of it on R plasmid elimination was also observed. Results showed that when the acting time was 24 hours, the cure rate of R plasmid was 2.42% and when the action time increased to 48 hours, the cure rate was elevated to 22. 57%. The missing pattern s of R plasmid might occur in diappearence of either multiple or single resistance.

Abstract:This experiment mainly describes the effects of acupuncture on immunologic function and histopathology of transplanted mammary cancer in mice. The results were as follows: In acupuncture group, NK cell activity and T-lymphocyte positive rate of acid α-naphthyl acetate esterase (ANAE) and lymphocyte transformation rate were all increased. Compared with the control group, there was a significant difference (P<0.01). The difference was insignificant when compared with normal group (P>0.05). Comparing the pathology grading of acupuncture group with control group, it showed marked difference in pathological section (P<0.01). Adenoid structure and the degree of lymphocytic infiltration also have marked difference between acupuncture and control group (P< 0.05). Less tumour volume in acupuncture group than in control group were observed (P<0.01). This indicated that acupuncture might increase the immunologic function of transplanted mammary cancer in mice and inhibit the growth of mammary cancer and enhance both differentiation level of mammary cancer cells and lymphocytic infiltration. Possibly acupuncture might reduce the malignancy of mammary cancer cells.

Abstract:Traditional Chinese Medicines act in many ways in treating and preventing CRF. Components of Chiinese medicines are very complicated, and a single herbal medicine may contain various components. Therefore, the action of Chinese herbal medicine, especially a complex prescription consisted of many herbal medicines, can not be singular. It has to be pleiotropy. Some effective drugs or prescriptions were found in the recent ten years, among whom the effect of Radix et Rhizoma Rhei in treating CRF has been confirmed, and its dosage form were by and by improved. From the above survey, it is seen that experimental researches in recent years laid their stress on pharmaceutical studies, and systemic research of TCM treatment on CRF and screening of drugs were lacking. Therefore, further prospective research of animal experimental models are still limited, more ideal models in accord with human CRF are expected.
