Abstract:Patients with ischemic apoplexy were treated with Buyang Huanwu Tang Granule for 10 weeks. The total effective rate was 88.5%. The clinical cure and markedly effective rates were 42.3%. Buyang Huanwu Tang Granule could improve hemorrheologic indexes and enhance the activity of erythrocyte sodium pump ([0K Na OS ]) in patients of ischemic apoplexy. The effect of Buyang Huanwu Tang Granule No. 1 with large dosage of Radix Astragali was superior to Buyang Huanwu Tang Granule No. 3.

Abstract:The effect of Shengmaisan (SMS) on coronary heart disease (CHD) patients, 30 angina pectoris and 68 acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and its peroxidation damage was studied. It was shown that the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in blood decreased and the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) in plasma increased in CHD patients in comparison with the healthy controls (P<0.001). When SMS was orally administered in 38 AMI patients, both SOD and GSH-Px activities were increased and the level of MDA decreased (P<0. 05), and these changes were even more significant when SMS was further ingested for another two weeks (P<0. 001). AT the same time, it was found that the changes of SOD, GSH-Px and MDA in the control group (30 AMI patients not taking SMS) were not significantly different (P>0. 05). It could be assumed that the pathogenesis of CHD is associated with free radical (FR) triggering a chain reaction of the lipid peroxidation, and that SMS is acting as an effective free radical scavenger, which would ameliorate the lipid peroxidation damage. Thus, SMS could be administered in the prevention and the treatment of CHD.

Abstract:Dynamic observations for 4 weeks were made on left ventricular function and oxygen free radicals (OFR) in 43 patients who suffered the first attack of acute myocardial infarction and was hospitalized in Coronary Care Unit within 36 hours. The results showed that Radix Astragali (RA) could strenthen the left ventricular function and had an effect of scavenging OFR. After administration of RA, the ratio of pre-ejection period/left ventricular ejection time (PEP/LVET) was decreased, the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities of erythrocytes were increased, and the lipid peroxidation (LPO) concentration of plasma was reduced. There was a significant difference between the RA group and the control group in the parameters mentioned above. The study demonstrated that the PEP/LVET ratio was closely correlated with SOD and LPO. It suggested that the scavenging effect of RA on OFR was one of its mechanisms of cardiotonic action.

Abstract:Combined electro-acupuncture with general anesthesia in pneumonectomy was studied here. The result showed that general anesthesia complemented with electro-acupuncture at the points of Hegu (LI 4) and Sanyangluo (SJ 8) enabled us to have reduced amount of fentanyl 38~85 μg/h compared with general anesthesia alone in each case. There were no statistical differences in blood pressure and heart rate during the operation in every group, all of the arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) were in normal range. It was considered that electro-acupuncture in combination with general anesthesia could reduce the use of dosage of anesthetics and the inhibition of physiological functions. It is a practical anesthetic method acceptible to the thoracic surgeon and patients.

Abstract:The author compared in this study the effects of the treatment with integrated traditional and western medicine with that of routine western medicine alone on the recovery of patients with acute hypertensive cerebral hemorrhage. The results of the treatments showed that integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine had better effect on speeding up the absorption of intracranial hematoma, elimination of encephaledema and restoration of neural functions than routine western medicine. There is significant difference between the results of the two kinds of treatment (P<0.05~0.01), which suggested that treating patients early with traditional Chinese medicine greatly helps the recovery of patients with cerebral hemorrhage.

Abstract:Sixty-two cerebral traumatic patients were randomly divided into two groups: acupuncture group (32 cases) and physiotherapy group (30 cases). The changes of mini-mental status examination (MMSE) scores and auditory evoked potential P300 were observed before and after treatment. Results: the markedly effective rate and the total effective rate of the acupuncture group were 46.9% and 81.3% respectively, which were significantly higher than that of 10.0% and 30.0% of the physiotherapy group (P < 0. 01). It was found that after treatment the above-mentioned indexes in the acupuncture group changed significantly (P<0.05~0.001), while in the physiotherapy group they were not (P> 0.05). The therapeutic effect in acupunctrue group was better than that in physiotherapy group (P < 0.001). The results confirmed that the cognitive function of cerebral traumatic dementia patients was enhanced effectively after acupuncturing Houxi (SI3) and Shenmen (HT7).

Abstract:In order to investigate the role of acupuncture in the regulation of cellular immune function, the changes of T lymphocytes subsets (CD3 +, CD4 +, CD8 +), soluble interleukin-2 receptor (SIL-2R) and betaendorphine (β-EP) in the peripheral blood of patients with malignant tumors before and after acupuncture were observed with the double blind method. Forty patients were divided randomly into two groups, 20 for each. One group was treated with acupuncture and the other one used for control. Results showed that acupuncture has the effect of enhancing the cellular immunity of patients with malignant tumors. Acupuncture treatment could increase the percentage of T lymphocyte subsets CD3 +, CD4 +and the ratio CD4 +/CD8 +(P<0. 01), increase the level of β-EP, as well as decrease the level of SIL-2R (P<0.01). The correlation analysis of three criteria showed there was a positive correlation between β-EP and T lymphocyte subsets and a negative correlation between β-EP and SIL-2R; there was also a negative correlation between T lymphocyte subsets and SIL-2R. Based on these results, a discussion on the acupuncture immunomodulation network was conducted in this article in order to explore the possible mechanism of acupuncture on immunomodulation.

Abstract:Seventeen cases of hypertensive nephropathy with azotemia (test group) treated with Zhengan Xifeng Decoction (ZGXFD) and a routine regimen of Western Medicine were observed. The result was compared with that of 15 cases treated with routine regimen alone (control.group). After 3 months of treatment, the blood pressure, sodium excretion, blood urea nitrogen and creatinine were all reduced, while creatinine clearance rate (CCr) and residual renal function index (RRFI) were improved significantly in both groups. Compared with the control group, the treatment on the test group showed a more prominent effect on lowering of diastolic blood pressure, elevating the hemoglobin, reducing the blood level of triglyceride and creatinine as well as improving on CCr and RRFI, suggesting the deterioration of residual renal function could be restrained by ZGXFD, through improving the disorder of lipid metabolism, osmolality gradient and creatinine kinetics.

Abstract:In this study, 48 cases of middle-aged and elderly female diabetes patients were divided randomly into two groups, and treated separately by western medicine alone (glibenclamide)in group A, and by traditional Chinese medicine (herbs that replenish the Kidney and activate blood circulation) and glibenclamide in group B. Before treatment, the patients of both groups had elevated glycosylated hemoglobin (HbAlc) and fast blood glucose (FBG) levels, decreased serum estradiol (E2) and testosterone/estradiol (E2/T) ratio, and the loss of bone mineral (elevated urinary calcium, phosphorus levels). Most of the patients in the two groups had the symptoms of soreness and weakness of the loins and knees, general weakness/dizziness, decreased sexual libido, palpitation and frequent urination, etc. These symptoms in traditional Chinese medicine belong to the deficiency of the Kidney. After treatment in both groups, the patients’ serum HbAlc, FBG, and urinary Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) got reduced, the concentration of serum sex hormone (E2, E2/T ratio) elevated, and the elimination of urinary calcium, phosphorus levels cut down. But, the therapeutic effect in group B is apparently better than that in group A. The symptoms of deficiency of the Kidney was apparently improved in group B. So, The authors think the medicinal herbs (reinforcing Kidney and activating blood circulation) have an important role in the prevention and treatment of the “Kidney deficiency” and bone mineral loss in middle-aged and elderly female diabetes patients.

Abstract:The therapeutic effect of Fuzheng Compound, a Chinese herbal medicine, on leukocyte count in 59 patients with cancer of advanced stage after chemotherapy or radiotherapy were observed. Among the 41 cases of leukopenia, leukocyte of 37 cases were normalized after treatment, the count pre- and post-treatment were (2.8±0.6)×109/L and (5.9 ×1.5)×109/L respectively (P<0.01). In the 18 patients with normal leukocyte count before treatment, the counts of 17 cases remained normal after treatment. The time for leukocyte recovering was 8.0 days in average, while that of 23 patients who did not take Fuzheng Compound was 20.6 × 1.8 days. The results indicated that Fuzheng Compound could alleviate the inhibition of chemo- or radiotherapy on hemopoietic function of bone marrow and has leukocytogenic effect.

Abstract:As compared with normal cells, cancer cells or malignant cells were morphologically abnormal: their contact inhibition and normal growth order were lost, the DNA content and ploid increased and such kind of cells were transplantable. If the malignancy should be decreased or the malignant cells reversed, the above abnormal changes could be reduced or disappear. BALB/c mice bearing ascites liver cancer were used, Chinese herbal prescription combined with copper and ferrum (CHPCCF) was given by gavage for 10 days, and then some cell-biological parameters were measured; further, the ascites cancer cells (control and treatment) were removed and retransplanted to another mice and observed. The results showed that in CHPCCF treatment group, DNA content of the cancer cells was decreased, and the proliferation index was reduced (control: 83.4 ± 2.6, CHPCCF group: 78.8 ± 1.5; or control: 67.2 ± 1.3, CHPCCF group: 64.2 ± 1.6, P<0.02), the number of the cancer cells in Gl phase increased obviously, but, those of S+G2M phases decreased (P<0.05~0.01); on the DNA histogram, the diploid peak became higher and bigger, but aneuploid or multiploid peaks became smaller. Furthermore, retransplanted experiments showed that in 2/10 animals, the tumors did not grow, and in other 8/10 animals, the tumors grew, but the tumors’ size were smaller than that of the control; the growth inhibition rate was 71. 7% - 88. 3%; and tumors’ grew slowly; the growth curve of the tumors in CHPCCF group was considerably lower than that of the control; the survival period of retransplanted animals was prolonged significantly (from 26.1 ± 11.8 to 38.1 ± 9.6, or to 39.6 ± 7.2 days, P<0.01); the increase in life span was 46% and 52% respectively. The results suggested that CHPCCF could reduce the malignancy of mice liver cancer cells.
