Abstract:Objective: Immune abnormality type of recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) is an important etiological type, major findings of that are the abnormal increases in auto and/or allo-antibodies of anti-zona pellucida, anti-phospholipid and anti-ABO blood group. The purpose of the present study is to assess the clinical values of integrated traditional and western medicine in treating the immune abnormality type of RSA.Methods: The aborters were treated by Zhibai Dihuang Pills for anti-zona pellucida antibodies, and clearing evil Heat, removing Dampness, replenishing blood and activating circulation by Chinese medicinal herbs recipe for anti-phospholipid and anti-ABO group antibodies. Results: After they had been treated by these recipes, 92.3% became pregnant with normal delivery. It was found in dynamic investigation that level of the antibodies turned to decrease gradually during the treatment, and that of anti-phospholipid and anti-ABO group antibodies increased again at beginning of pregnancy and then decreased gradually with continuing the treatment. Conclusion: Chinese herbs recipe could be used to treat RSA of immune abnormality-type by way of decreasing the elevated levels of auto and/or allo-antibodies.

Abstract:Objective: To determine the effectiveness of Bailong Tablet and chemotherapy on treatment of moderate and advanced cancers. Methods: The patients were divided randomly into two groups. The treated group (n= 41) was treated with chemotherapy plus Bailong Tablet; and the control group (n= 22) treated with chemotherapy alone. Treatment effectiveness was measured with Karnofsky scores. Results: Karnofsky performance status in the treated group before and after treatment was 66.0 ± 8.7 and 68.0 ± 5.9 respectively, that in the control group was 67. 0 ± 6.8 and 53. 0 ± 7.3 respectively. The completion rate of chemotherapy in the treated group (92.6%, 38/41) was higher than that in control (77.2%, 17/22,P < 0.05). The side-effects caused by chemotherapy in the treated group were lower than that in the control group (P < 0.05). CD3 +, CD4 + and CD4 + /CD8 + ratio were higher in the treated group. Conclusion: Bailong Tablet can enhance the therapeutic effect and reduce the side-effects of chemotherapy. One possible mechanism is the modulation of cellular immune function.

Abstract:Objective: To explore the therapeutic effect and its mechanism mainly using traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) of Replenishing Qi and Nourishing Yin (RQNY) with a small dosage of Tapazole for treatment of Graves’ disease (GD).Methods: The changes of thyroid function and the activity of sodium pump of human erythrocyte in the patients with Graves’ disease were observed and compared before and after treatment between the treated group (42 cases) by combining treatment mainly using TCM of RQNY and a small amount of Tapazole and a control group (42 cases) by Tapazole alone. Results: After treatment for half a year, one and two years, the serum levels of T3, T4 in above two groups were markedly decreased than those of before treatment, the therapeutic effect of treated group was superior to that of the control group. The activity of sodium pump in human erythrocyte in the GD patients was obviously higher than that of normal group and that of before treatment. After treatment for one and two years mainly by TCM or western medicine, the erythrocyte sodium pump activity was obviously lower than that of normal group and that of before treatment. The decrease of erythrocyte sodium pump activity in the treated group was markedly lower than that in the control group.

Abstract:Objective: To observe the clinical effects of Garlicin on unstable angina pectoris (UAP) and explore how the Garlicin’s effects vary among syndromes as defined by traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).Methods: Fifty-five patients with UAP were randomly divided into the Garlicin group (34 patients) and the control group (21 patients). Each patient was classified according to TCM Syndrome Differentiation as having Cold Syndrome type, Heat Syndrome type, severe blood stasis (SBS) type, and mild blood stasis (MBS) type of UAP. Garlicin 60 mg or nitroglycerin 5 mg was given to the two groups respectively by intravenous drip for 10 days as one therapeutic course. The curative effect was evaluated by symptomatic changes and electrocardiogram. The effective rates as well as indexes such as blood lipid, lipoprotein, apolipoprotein, and granule membrane protein-140 (GMP-140) were compared between groups and types. Results: Garlicin and nitroglycerin group did not differ significantly in effective rate, while that of Garlicin group was higher for the Cold Syndrome type than that of Heat Syndrome type (P < 0. 01). The high density lipoprotein/low density lipoprotein ratio and apolipoprotein A-I level rose markedly in the former type (P < 0.05), while an opposite trend was seen in the Heat Syndrome type. Garlicin was more effective in the SBS type than that in the MBS type, and it markedly decreased GMP-140 in the MBS type. Conclusions: Garlicin is effective in UAP, especially the Cold Syndrome and SBS types. Its mechanism may involve improving blood lipid levels and inhibiting platelet activation.

Abstract:Objective: To find out whether high resection rate and low incidence of disability can be obtained from operations for tumors on cerebral functional areas by applying “combined acupuncture-drug anesthesia”Methods: According to the route of entry of operations, two different groups of acupoints for body acupuncture combined with ear acupuncture therapy were applied. Results: Among the 80 patients operated on, 20 were suffering from tumors in the speech center, 60 in the sensorimotor center. Good result was obtained from all the operations. Grade 1 effective rate of acupuncture anesthesia reached 100%. None of the patients experienced aggravation of dysphasia or dysfunction. Five patients showed aggravation of myasthenia and dysesthesia, but all of them recovered within 2-4 weeks. Conclusions: High resection rate and low incidence of disability may result from operations performed with “combined acupuncture-drug anesthesia;” so this kind of anesthesia can be used as a routine anesthetic method for operations.

Abstract:Objective: To observe the effect of tonifying Kidney herbs (TKH) on pituitary gland, ovary, and adrenal gland of androgen sterilized rats (ASR).Methods: ASR model was established by injecting testosterone propionate subcutaneously to Sprague-Dawley (SD) female rats of 9 days age. Morphological and endocrinological change of pituitary gland, ovary and adrenal gland in rats of 100–107 days old before and after feeding TKH extract were observed by light and electron microscope, cell cultures, immunohistochemical studies, and radioimmunoassay. Results: In the ASR groups, there were intracytoplasmic lipid drops, crinophagy, vacuole, and autophagy in pituitary gland, anovulation in ovary, and hyperplasia of reticular zone in adrenal gland. At the same time, serum follicular stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone decreased (P < 0.05-0.005) and serum testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone levels increased significantly (P < 0.01-0.001). These morphologiacl and endocrinological changes were all returned to normal range after the TKH treatment.

Abstract:Objective: To find the prevention of restenosis after transluminal angioplasty (TA).Methods: Sixty rabbit iliac arteries of 30 rabbits were randomly divided into three groups: group A, B and C, 20 in each. After experimental atherosclerotic stenosis and TA performing, ordinary forage plus 2 g of Hirudo (Hirudo nipponica whitmania) powder was fed to group A every day, to the group B, 2 gSalvia miltiorrhiza (red sage root) powder was added and to the group C, ordinary forage only. Angiography and pathomorphological examination were carried out 30 days later. Results: (1) Hirudo significantly reduced the thickness of iliac intima as compared with the other two groups (P < 0.05), the thickness in the group A, B and C was 40.1 ± 9.8 μm, 48.2 ± 8. 2 μm and 69. 3 ± 9. 2 μm respectively. (2) The incidence of restenosis after TA in both group A (31.4%) and group B (48.4%)were significantly lower than that in the group C (62.8%,P < 0.05). The difference was also found between the group A and B(P < 0.05). (3) Ultrastructure examined by transmission electron microscopy showed that less rough endoplasmic reticulum and more myofilaments in well differentiated smooth muscle cell (SMC) of the arterial intima in the group A and B, while in the group C, more rough endoplasmic reticulum, more synthetic cells were seen in SMC.Conclusions: Hirudo andSalvia miltiorrhiza could effectively inhibit the hyperplasia of SMC in arterial intima and reduce intima thickness and the incidence of restenosis after TA significantly, thus it might play a role in the prevention of restenosis after TA. The effect of Hirudo is more potent than that ofSalvia miltiorrhiza.

Abstract:Objective: To observe the effects of tripterine on mRNA expression of oncogene c-myc and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) of rats. Methods: The fifth to tenth passage culture of VSMCs was used, tripterine and 20% fetal calf serum added into the medium of cultured VSMCs at concentration of 0.1 mg/L, 0.2 mg/L and 0.3 mg/L after serum-free cultivation for 24 hours. The general RNA was isolated from VSMCs at 6 and 12 hours after the drug addition for detection of oncogene c-myc and PDGF mRNA respectively by dot blot hybridization. The cDNA probes were labeled by digoxin. Results: Tripterine inhibited the expression of PDGF mRNA of VSMCs, and decreased expression of oncogene cmyc mRNA in a dose-dependent manner, either vs. control. Conclusion: Tripterine can inhibit expression of oncogene c-myc and PDGF-A mRNA in VSMCs, therefore it would inhibit overproliferation of VSMCs.

Abstract:Objective: To observe the curative effect of the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) Qing Yi Tang (QYT, ) in acute necrotizing pancreatitis (ANP).Methods: Twenty three dogs were randomly divided into 3 groups. In the control group (n= 7), animals underwent laparatomy only. In the ANP group (n = 8), acute necrotizing pancreatitis was induced by injection of 0.5 ml/kg 5 % sodium taurocholate with 3000 u/ kg trypsin into the pancreatic duct. While in TCM group (n = 8) were fed everyday with QYT after onset of ANP. All animals were sacrificed 7 days later and organs were gathered and cultured. Mucosal and luminal floras of the intestine were analysed. Pancreas and ileal mucosa were examined histologically and ultra-microscopi-cally, the levels of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and amylase in blood were determined. Results: In the TCM group, histologic and ultra-structural damages in pancreas and ileal mucosa were much milder as compared with those of ANP group. In ANP group, there was a significant increase of E. coli and bacteroids, and a significant decrease of bifidobacteria, lactobacilli and enterococci in the intestinal mucosa, while in the TCM group, these changes were alleviated significantly (P < 0.05 orP < 0.01). As compared with the ANP group, the bacterial translocation (BT) rate was reduced from 100 % to 50 %, and the counts of translocated bacteria were decreased 10–40 times, the levels of LPS and amylase reduced 2–3 times. Conclusions: TCM recipe QYT showed their protective effects on gut barrier function by alleviating the damage of intestinal mucosa and microecologic disturbance following acute pancreatitis. As a result, the chances of BT and enterogenic infection declined. These preparation might be promising in the prophylaxis and treatment of infection complicating ANP.
