Abstract:Objective: To find the effective method in treating infantile chronic aplastic anemia (ICAA) by using traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).Methods: Seventy-eight cases of ICAA were observed, 48 in the treated group were treated with Tiaoxue Yisui recipe, and 30 cases in the control group with SSL regimen. Results: The remission rate and total effective rate in the treated group were 52.08% and 81.25% respectively, which were higher than those in the control group (P < 0.05). After one year’s treatment the ratio of hemopoietic and non-hemopoietic cells in the treated group was higher than that in the control group (P < 0.05).Conclusion: Tiaoxue Yisui recipe could improve the living quality of ICAA patients. The therapeutical mechanism of the recipe might be related to its promoting the proliferation of hemopoietic stem cells and regulating the immune function.

Abstract:Objective: To find effective therapeutic approach for treating true idiopathic precocious puberty suitable to our national condition and different from gonadotrophin releasing hormone analogue. Methods: One hundred and six girls with idiopathic precocious puberty were divided into 3 groups. The 51 girls in the TCM-WM group were treated with Chinese herbal medicine combined with megestrol acetate (MA), 35 girls in the MA group treated with megestrol acetate alone, and 20 girls were taken as control group and given no treatment at all. Luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) stimulating test were performed before and after treatment, and the size of the uterus and ovary, linear growth rate, X-ray bone age measurement and final height prediction were also observed simultaneously. Results: After treated with TCM-WM for 2.7 years in average, the luteinizing hormone (LH) peak value of LHRH stimulating test was reduced from 48.5 ± 5.2 IU/L to 12. 2 ± 1.3 IU/L, size of uterus and ovary decreased, secondary sexual characteristics regressed, the bone age difference/chronological age difference value (ΔBA/ΔCA) reduced from 1.35 ± 0.09 to 0.65 ± 0.05 and predictive final height increased from 153.3 ± 0.5 cm to 158.5 ± 0.6 cm.Conclusion: TCM-WM therapy could not only modulate the function of hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis and the development of internal genitalia, but also could decelerate skeletal growth, delay skeletal maturation, and thereby prevent premature epiphyseal fusion and increase the final height of patients.

Abstract:Objective: To observe the acting pattern on the immune system by Kidney tonifying (KT) drugs. Methods: Three composite recipes were used on the 7- and 14-day corticosterone rat model to study the effect of recipes on the different patterns of immuno-modulatory and neuro-endocrinological systems. Results: The immune system of Spleen Invigorating (SI) group was well protected in either 7- or 14-day experiments, with the SI recipe showing no effect on the neuroendocrine system. It suggested that SI recipe might have direct action on immune system. On the other hand, KT group with no effect on neuroendocrine-immune (NEI) system in 7-day experiment, but showed a remarkable protective effect of the whole NEI system in 14-day experiment. Conclusion: The results indicated that KT recipe acts on the neuroendocrine system first, and then influence the immune system. It means that the action took place through down pathway of NEI network.

Abstract:Objective: To explore the therapeutic mechanism of the combined use of Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae, ligustrazine and Radix Sanchi in treating late hemorrhagic shock in rabbit. Methods: Rabbit hemorrhagic shock models were set up according to Wiggers’ method and treated with the combined therapy. Levels of RBC superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, plasma malondialdehyde (MDA), blood lactate (BL) and magnesium (Mg++) were continuously monitored before shock, 120 minutes after shock, 60 and 120 minutes after reinfusion. Results: (1) Levels of SOD decreased and MDA, BL, Mg++ increased markedly 120 minutes after shock, indicating that there existed cell membrane damage caused by oxygen free radicals in hemorrhagic shock. (2) The combination therapy could alleviate lipid peroxidation injury to tissue, enhance the activity of SOD and lower the concentration of MDA significantly,P < 0.01 or 0.05, as compared with the control group. Conclusion: The combined use of the three drugs could gain the same effect with half dosage as that gained from the whole dosage of one single drug. It could also reduce the negative effect of treatment, such as hypotension and slowing down of heart rate

Abstract:Objective: To explore the possibility of using cortical infrared thermography (CIT) and temperature in studying the principle of acupuncture and moxibustion. Methods: The changes of the cerebral cortical temperature during electro-acupuncture (EA) measured by CIT in twenty cats were observed. By opening the skull before experiments, the cortex of animals was revealed. The distribution of the cortical temperature of the awakened animals was studied by AGA infrared thermovision, and the thermograms were analysed by computer. Results: (1) The thermograms of the profile of the cortex could be displayed clearly, the temperature was higher in the ante and lower in post-cortex than that in other regions. (2) No tendency of cortical temperature ascending within 30 minutes in cats without EA. (3) After EA, the temperature of cortex generally increased by 0.3 to 1.7 degrees centigrade, and 5 min after EA, the increment of temperature was the highest, 10 min after EA, the temperature increment was higher than before EA, but lower than 5 min after EA. The cortical temperature recovered 10 min after stopping the stimulation. (4) The temperature increment was more obvious in the regions of ant. ectosylvian, ant. supra-Sylvian and ant. Sylvian than that in other regions. No matter where the site of EA was, every group had its own special region of higher temperature increment. Conclusion: The temperature increased in the cortex were mainly in the somatosensory regions. The extent and position of temperature response of cortex after EA could be displayed with CIT directly by picture. The display of the temperature response could be taken as the indication of the nervous activity. CIT could be used to conduct the studies of the acupuncture and the brain.

Abstract:Objective: Radiographic contrast media can induce renal failure and it may serve as an experimental model of acute renal failure (ARF). The study was aimed to determine the protective effect of Shengmai Injection (SMI) on contrast medium-associated ARF in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Methods: Twenty healthy SD rats of both sex were randomly divided into two groups, Group A (control group) treated with glycerin+0. 9% saline+meglucamine diatrizoate, and group B (preventive group) with glycerin+SMI+meglucamine diatrizoate. Results: In Group B, the levels of blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, renal phospholipase A2 (PLA2) and calcium were all significantly lower than those in Group A,P < 0.01. The results indicated the renal injury induced by meglucamine diatrizoate was alleviated by SMI.Conclusion: SMI could prevent renal tissue from contrast media induced nephropathy in SD rats. The effect may partially owe to its preventing intracellular calcium accumulation, inhibiting PLA2 activity and dilating renal vessels.
