Abstract:To observe the effect of Chinese medicine Shenshao Tablet (参芍片, SST) on the: quality of life in coronary heart disease (CHD) patients with stable angina pectoris (SAP). Sixty-six: patients with SAP confirmed by coronary angiography were enrolled and assigned to two groups by means of PROC PLAN using a SAS 6.12 software in a double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled design. Patients in the treated group were treated with SST, and the others in the control group were given placebo. The weekly angina frequency, quality of life scale [Seattle Angina Questionnaire (SAQ)] and incidence of important clinical events were observed to evaluate the intervention effect of SST on the quality of life for CHD patients with SAP. During the study, one case dropped out in the treated group and two cases in the control group,: respectively, and 63 cases including 32 cases in the treated group, and 31 cases in the control group completed the trial. After four weeks of treatment, the weekly angina frequency of the treated group (5.32±2.46 times per week) was significantly less than that of the control group (7.32±3.20 times per week, P<0.05). The total score of the quality of life in the treated group (71.30±5.44) was obviously higher than that in the control group (63.50±4.60, P<0.01), and the angina stability, angina frequency, and treatment satisfaction were significantly superior to those in the control group (P<0.01). The incidence of important clinical events of the treated group (3.1%) was lower than that of the control group (6.5%) during the six-month follow-up period, but the difference was insignificant (P>0.05). SST could lower the angina frequency and greatly improve the quality of: life in CHD patients with SAP.

Abstract:To observe the effect of long-term application of Shengmai Capsule (生脉胶囊, SMC) on recovery of patients after myocardial infarction. A total of 120 myocardial infarction patients were: assigned into two groups. Changes of angina pectoris, electrocardiogram (ECG), living capacity and heart function in patients were observed after 6-month treatment. The total effective rate in alleviating angina: pectoris was 90.0% and that in improving ECG figure was 93.3% in the treatment group, both were significantly higher than those in the control group, 73.4% and 70.0% respectively (P<0.05). The Karnofsky Performance Status scores of heart function were increased and the Activity of Daily Living scores in living capacity decreased in both groups, but the improvements were better in the treatment group (P<0.01 and P<0.05). The parameters of cardiac function, including cardiac output, stroke volume, cardiac index and ejection fraction, were increased in both groups, but the increments in the treatment group were more significant (P<0.01 or P<0.05). Long-term application of SMC could effectively prevent and treat angina pectoris, improve the living capacity and accelerate the recovery of heart function in patients after myocardial infarction.

Abstract:To preliminarily explore the relationship between thrombosis and its associated factors in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) of turbidity-phlegm blocking syndrome (TPB), and to study its acting mechanism. Plasma levels of thrombosis-associated factors, including Von Willebrand factor: (vWF), D-dimer, and fibrinogen (Fg), in 85 patients of CHD with TPB, 93 with CHD of non-TPD, and 89 healthy persons were detected and compared. Levels of the three factors were increased in all the CHD: patients, and were higher in TPB patients than in non-TPB patients (P<0.01 or P<0.05). The TPB: syndrome in CHD patients was closely related to the blood coagulation-fibrinolytic system; they might be in pre-thrombosis state, and the plasma levels of vWF, D-dimer, and Fg could be taken as the objective indices for thrombosis differentiation of TPB syndrome in CHD patients.

Abstract:To determine the bioinformatical characteristics of differential gene expression in patients with chronic superficial gastritis (CSG) with the Pi-deficiency syndrome (PDS) and those of the non-Pi-deficiency syndrome (non-PDS), i.e. patients of CSG with Pi (脾)-Wei (胃) dampnese-heat syndrome and healthy persons. With the BRB-Array Tools software package, original data collection and bioinformatic: analysis of gene arrays were conducted in 6 CSG patients of PDS (CSG-PDS), 6 CSG patients of non-PDS (CSG-nPDS), and 6 healthy volunteers (Normal). Compared with non-PDS, the gene expressions: in PDS with regards to protein synthesis, energy metabolism, immune reaction and ionic transport tended to be down-regulated, while those concerning secretion, cytoskeleton and ubiquitinization were up-regulated dominantly. The two kinds of samples, CSG-PDS/Normal and CSG-PDS/CSG-nPDS, have their respective gene expression profiles with different characteristics. Gene expression profile has certain referential significance in syndrome classification.

Abstract:To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of Chinese drugs for the treatment of children’s infectious mononucleosis (CIM). Sixty CIM patients were assigned into the treated group and the control group, patients in the treated group were administered with Chinese herbal decoction, and those in the control group were treated with intravenous dripping of ganciclovir 10 mg/kg per day, for a treatment course of 14 days. The total effective rate was 96.0% in the treated group and 97.1% in the control group, showing insignificant difference between groups. The efficacy in the treated group was superior to that in the control group on the fever clearance time (3.0±1.5 days vs 4.9±3.9 days ) and the disappearance time of cervical lymph node swelling (0.8±1.0 score vs 1.5±1.2 score), showing statistical significance (all P<0.05). T-cell subsets were markedly improved in both groups after treatment. Adverse reaction occurred in four cases of the control group. Using Chinese herbs for clearing heat, removing toxin, activating blood circulation, and dissolving stasis is effective and safe for the treatment of CIM. It can effectively improve the clinical symptoms and shows a certain effect on immune regulation.

Abstract:To study the clinical effects of Prescription Zhuyun-III (助孕3号方, ZYIII) on early pregnant women diagnosed as threatened abortion, and its mechanism in immunity and endocrine by determining serum Th1- and Th2-type cytokines, progesterone, and β-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-HCG). The treatment group comprised 30 early pregnant women diagnosed as threatened abortion of deficiency syndrome of Pi (脾), Shen (肾), or both. The control group consisted of 20 normal early pregnant women of similar gestational age. Patients in the treatment group were administered with ZYIII for 4 weeks. Peripheral blood samples were collected pre- and post-treatment from both the treatment and the control groups. Serum Th1-type cytokine [interleukin-2 (IL-2)] and Th2-type cytokine [interleukin-10 (IL-10)] were determined by flow cytometry, and serum progesterone and β-HCG were determined by ELISA. (1) The treatment was effective in 26 and ineffective in 4 patients of the treatment group. Therefore, the cure percentage was 86.67%. (2) In the treatment group before the treatment, IL-2 was significantly higher, IL-10 tended to be less, and the Th1/Th2 balance shifted toward Th1 compared with those in the control group. (3) After the treatment, IL-2 was decreased, IL-10 was increased, and IL-2/IL-10 was decreased. Both progesterone and β-HCG were increased. Changes of progesterone were positively correlated with changes of IL-10, whereas changes of β-HCG were negatively correlated with changes of IL-2. Our study suggests that ZYIII has an evident function of protecting the fetus, and one of its mechanisms is inhibiting the secretion of Th1 cytokines, promoting the secretion of Th2 cytokines, and recovering the pathological shift of the Th1/Th2 balance. The other possible mechanism is increasing serum progesterone and β-HCG concentrations. Moreover, there are some correlations between the above two effects.

Abstract:To investigate the effects and mechanism of the active components of Red Paeonia and Rhizoma chuanxiong (Xiongshao Capsule, 芎芍胶囊, XSC) on angiogenesis in atherosclerosis plaque in rabbits. Fifty New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into the normal group, the model group, and the three medicated groups treated respectively with Simvastatin (2.5 mg/kg per day), low-dose (0.24 g/kg per day) and high-dose (0.48 g/kg per day) XSC, 10 in each group. Rabbits in the normal group were fed with regular diet. To those in the other four groups, high fat diet was given, and a balloon angioplasty was performed two weeks later to establish abdominal aortic atherosclerosis model. Then, the model rabbits were fed continuously with high fat diet, and to those in the medicated groups, the testing drugs were added in the forage correspondingly for 6 successive weeks. Levels of blood lipids were measured at the end of the experiment. Meantime, serum levels of high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) were detected with enzyme-linked immunoassay; the plaque area (PA), cross-sectional vascular area (CVA) and correcting plaque area (PA/CVA) were determined quantitatively using imaging software; and the protein expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and factor VIII related antigen (FVIIIRAg) in plaque was detected using immunohistochemical method. As compared with the model group, the content of total cholesterol (TC) in the three medicated groups, and contents of triglyceride (TG) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in the Simvastatin group were lower to various extents (P<0.05, P<0.01). The serum level of hsCRP in all modeled rabbits was higher than that in the normal group, but in the three treated groups it was significantly lower than that in the model group (P<0.05, P<0.01). Expressions of VEGF and FVIIIRAg, as well as PA/CVA in the three medicated groups were significantly lower than those in the model control group (P<0.05, P<0.01). The active components of Red Paeonia and Rhizoma chuanxiong have definite effects in delaying the genesis and development of atherosclerosis, its mechanism might be related with the inhibition on angiogenesis in plaque, and also with its actions of lipo-metabolism regulation and anti-inflammation.

Abstract:To study the effect of tanshinone II A on the cell signal transduction system protein kinase B (Akt) in rats with hypertrophy of the myocardium induced by partial constriction of the thoracic aorta. Rat models of myocardial hypertrophy were established by the thoracic aorta partial constriction method. Forty-eight rats were randomly divided into the sham-operative group, the model group, the valsartan treatment group, and the low-, medium-, and high-dose tanshinone treatment groups. The heart mass index (HMI), left ventricular mass index (LVMI), ejection fraction (EF), left ventricular posterior wall (LVPW), and interventricular septal thickness (IVS) were detected by high-frequency ultrasonography. The myocardial fiber diameter (MFD) was detected by HE staining, and the contents of p-Akt and p-Gsk3β in the myocardium were detected by Western blot. Compared with the sham-operative group, the levels of HMI, LVMI, LVPW, IVS, and MFD were increased respectively in the other groups (P<0.05); the contents of p-Akt and p-Gsk3β were also increased in the other groups. Compared with the model group, the levels of HMI, LVMI, LVPW, IVS, and MFD were decreased respectively in all treatment groups (P<0.05); the contents of p-Akt and p-Gsk3β were decreased in all treatment groups as well. There was no significant difference, however, among the low-, medium-, and high-dose tanshinone treatment groups and the valsartan treatment group (P>0.05). Tanshinone II A can prevent myocardial hypertrophy by its action on the protein kinase B (Akt) signaling pathway.

Abstract:To study the pharmacological properties of Tougu Xiaotong Granule (透骨消痛颗粒,: TGXTG) in preventing and treating knee osteoarthritis (KOA) at the molecular level. The computational methods, including principal component analysis, molecular docking, target-ligand space distribution, and the predictions of absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity (ADMET), were introduced to characterize the molecules in TGXTG. The structural properties of molecules in TGXTG were more: diverse than those of the drug/drug-like molecules, and TGXTG could interact with significant target enzymes related to KOA. In addition, the cluster of effective components was preliminarily identified by the target-ligand space distributions. As to the results of ADMET properties, some of them were unsatisfactory, and were merely regarded as references here. Based on this computational pharmacology study, TGXTG is a broad-broadspectrum recipe inhibiting many important target enzymes, which could effectively postpone the degeneration of spectrum cartilage by coordinately inhibiting the biological effects of cytokines, matrix metallopeptidase 3, and oxygen free radicals. radicals.

Abstract:To study the effects and possible mechanisms of effective composite of Naodesheng (脑得生, NDS) on permanent cerebral ischemia-induced injury in rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats: with middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) were established with the modified suture method, and they were randomly divided into the following groups: the sham-operated group, the model group, the Nimodipine group (0.012 g/kg), the NDS group (1.075 g/kg), the total extracts group (0.23 g/kg), the high-dose NEC group (0.07 g/kg), the middle-dose NEC group (0.02 g/kg), and the low-dose NEC group (0.007 g/kg). The aforesaid medicines were administered at the 2nd, 4th, and 24th h after focal cerebral ischemia, and the infarction size and water content in the brain were evaluated at the 26th h after MCAO. Then, after oral administration once daily for 7 successive days, the changes in the degree of neurological deficit, oxidative stress, and apoptosis were measured on the 7th day. NEC could significantly reduce the infarction size after focal cerebral ischemia, and slightly relieve water content in the brain, significantly alleviate neurological function impairment, increase the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and adenosine triphosphate enzyme (ATPase) activity, and decrease the content of malondialdehyde (MDA). NEC could also extenuate Bax and caspase-3 expression in the hippocampus tissue of the ischemic region. As compared with the three NEC treated groups, the high-dose NEC showed better efficacy. NEC could significantly reduce brain injury induced by ischemia;: its mechanism was closely associated with hindering oxidative stress and apoptosis. The effective composite-compositeguided methodology is a feasible tool to improve the neuro-protective properties of the Chinese medicine guided prescription NDS against focal cerebral ischemia in rats.

Abstract:To objectively assess the effect of Qiming Granule (芪明颗粒) in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy (DR) by fluorescence fundus angiography (FFA). In a multi-center, randomized, parallel controlled clinical trial, patients with DR were randomly assigned to the control group (calcium dobesilate capsule) and the test group (Qiming Granule). Changes in the retinal blood circulation time were recorded by FFA after 3 months of medication. Significant reduction was observed in the retinal arterio-venous circulation time (AVCT) in both groups (P<0.01), the value was 7.635±3.149 s before treatment and 5.165 ±3.382 s after treatment in the treated group, and 7.737±3.413 s and 5.313±3.472 s in the control group respectively. Qiming Granule also reduced the arm-to-retinal circulation time (ARCT, P<0.05). The value was 17.867±3.872 s before treatment and 15.643±4.648 s after treatment in the treated group, and 17.217±3.833 s and 16.312±3.613 s in the control group (P>0.05) respectively. The ARCT in the tested group was reduced, with a statistically significant difference post-medication (P<0.01). As a Chinese medicine complex prescription, Qiming Granule may alleviate retinal hypoxia and ischemia by increasing retinal blood flow and improving the blood circulation.

Abstract:To observe the clinical effect of Qingzhen Decoction (清疹汤, QZD) on measles. Methods: Adopting the randomizing digital table, 62 patients with measles were assigned to two groups, 32 in the treated group and 30 in the control group. All patients were treated with routine therapy, but QZD was given to the treated group additionally for 5 days. Changes of clinical symptoms, blood routine and liver function before and after treatment were observed, and the medical cost was calculated. After the 5-day treatment, the normalization rate of irritative cough in the treated and the control group was 88.9% (24/27) and 56.0% (14/25) respectively, that of conjunctival congestion was 90.0% (27/30) and 65.5% (19/29) respectively, showing significant differences between groups (P<0.05). The liver function normalization rate in the two groups was 28.6% (2/7) and 25.0% (2/8), and the average medical cost ¥740.7 and ¥749.3, respectively. The total effective rate in the two groups was 96.9% and 93.3% respectively, showing insignificant difference between groups (P>0.05). QZD could actively improve the respiratory symptoms like irritative cough and the inflammatory symptoms of eye like conjunctival congestion in patients with measles.

Abstract:Metastasis is one of the specificities of late stage tumor and also a lethal factor often encountered. The study of tumor metastasis has important meaning for prolonging patients’ survival and elevating their quality of life, but no really ideal prevention and treatment method has been found so far. Recent researches showed that tumor metastasis is correlated with platelet aggregation and blood hyperviscosity manner. Therefore, the early application of surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and biological therapies, in combination with Chinese medicine therapy for activating blood circulation and removing stasis (ABCRS) may be, after all, an effective approach. ABCRS therapy is an important therapy of Chinese medicine, which, composed of several methods like smoothening blood flow in vessels, promoting blood circulation and dispersing stagnant blood, could influence tumor metastasis to different extents, and could coordinate with some other Chinese medicine therapeutic methods like supplementing qi, promoting qi, clearing heat, removing toxic substances, warming meridian, dispelling wind, eliminating dampness, nourishing yin, dissolving sputum, relieving stagnancy, emptying viscerals, etc. The effect and acting mechanism of ABCRS on tumor metastasis is summarized in this paper and its bi-directional regulatory effects discussed as well.
