Abstract:Plasma cortisol levels and leukocyte glucocorticosteroid receptor (GCR) contents were assayed in 10 patients with Deficiency-Cold Syndrome, 10 patients with Deficiency-Heat Syndrome, and 10 healthy subjects as normal control. The results showed practically normal plasma cortisol levels in the Deficiency-Cold Group, but the leukocyte GCR contents were markedly lowered. In the Deficiency-Heat group, plasma cortisol levels were remarkably elevated and the leukocyte GCR contents also tended to be higher than normal. The quantity of plasma cortisol concentrations multiplied by leukocyte GCR contents can be taken as a sensitive index for the differentiation of Cold and Heat natures in Deficiency Syndromes.

Abstract:The levels of estrogen receptor (ER) in human peripheral leucocytes in 22 women with climacteric syndrome were measured by radioligand method. The results were compared with those of 12 healthy women of child-bearing age. It was found that the contents of leucocytic ER in patients with climacteric syndrome were significantly lower than healthy women of child-bearing age (372±149 vs 1143 ±255 Rs binding sites/cell). The authors used a Chinese prescription — Liuwei Dihuang Pills (LDP) to treat the patients for 2 months. The levels of leucocytic ER were increased after treatment. The data indicate a decrease of ER levels in leucocytes may be involved in the pathogenesis of climacteric syndrome. LDP not only increase plasma estradiol levels, but also increase the leucocytic ER levels. This may be the basis of the therapeutic effect of LDP on climacteric syndrome.

Abstract:Changes in follicular stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicular sizes were observed in 10 patients with chronic anovulation during electroacupuncture treatment. Seven cases were diagnosed as suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome, 2 from dysfunctional uterine bleeding, and 1 from hypogonadotropic amenorrhea. Among them 8 cases complained of infertility for an average of 2. 7years. Ovulation was confirmed by pregnancy or the combination of biphasic basal body temperature and ultrasonographic signs. During one course of 3 consecutive days of electroacupuncture treatment on acupoints Guanyuan (Ren 4), Zhongji (Ren 3), Zigong (Extra 16) and Sanyingjiao (Sp 6), ovulation resulted in 5 patients (ovulating group) and 3 of the 4 infertile women became pregnant. Five cases failed to ovulate (non-ovulating group), 3 of them reached a biphasic basal body temperature without ovulatory signs on ultrasonograph. Serum FSH, LH values and FSH pulse frequency increased significantly during-electroacupuncture treatment in the ovulating group (from 2. 10±0.42 pulses/4h to 3. 70±1.64 pulses/4 h), but not in the non-ovulating group. No apparent change was found in LH pulse frequency, or in pulse amplitudes for FSH and LH. In the ovulating group, diameters of ovarian follicules markedly increased, but their growth was limited in the non-ovulation group. The results suggest ovulation may be induced by electroacupuncture via a regulation on the hypothalamic-pituitary function, leading to normal secretion of FSH and LH.

Abstract:This paper reports the results of a double-blind trial in 220 patients with acute cerebral infarction evidenced by computerized tomography, who were randomly divided into a Chuanxiong group (134 cases) and a low molecular weight dextran group (86 cases). A weighted scoring system was adopted to evaluate the neurological function and living capability. The results showed that the total therapeutic efficacy rate in the Chuanxiong group and in the dextran 40 group were 86.6% and 62.8% respectively. The effects of Chuanxiong on the treatment of acute cerebral infarction was superior to the low molecular weight dextran. and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P<0.01).

Abstract:Ultrasonic cardiograms were performed on 120 aged subjects. Experiments showed the left ventricular function in the hypertensive aged group (80 cases) was lower than that in the aged normal blood pressure group (40 cases), while the left ventricular function in the deficiency of Heart-energy hypertensive patients (46 cases) was lower than in the non-deficiency of Heart-energy hypertensive patients (34 cases). After practising Qigong for 1 year, cardiac output was increased. The total peripheral resistance decreased and the ejection fraction mitral valve diastolic closing velocity and the mean velocity of circumferential fiber shortening tended to be increased. The results indicate Qigong has a regulatory effect on haemodynamic alteration, as well as on improvement of the left ventricular function. Nailfold microcirculation detection of 120 aged subjects was made. The results showed that hypertension had an accelerating effect on the disturbance of microcirculation. The incidence of disturbance of microcirculation was 73.91% in the deficiency of Heart-energy hypertensive patients, after 1 year of Qigong practice, the incidence of disturbance of microcirculation was 39.13% (P<0.01). The results suggest Qigong has an effect on Heart-energy and regulation of the blood channel.

Abstract:A test was carried out to evaluate. the effect of Qingong Changchun capsule on decreased fluid intelligence associated with aging. Nootropil and a placebo were used as the control drugs. Random, single-blind and self-control observation methods were applied. Ninety days were spent for clinical study. One hundred and fifty-four elderly subjects were divided into three groups (Test 63, nootropil 60, placebo 31). The method of measuring intelligence was gauged by communication between subject and computer. The measure included eight parameters. The main results were as follows: In the test group, there were significant differences (P<0.01) in speed of calculation (5.9±2.5 s, 5.1±2.1 s), speed of digits and pictures (24.2±6.2 s, 21.7±6.7 s), two-digit span (2.8±1.0, 3.2±0.8) and another two parameters before and after treatment. In the nootropil group, some parameters were also improved significantly. But in the normal control there was not any evident change. The results suggest that the treatment is an effective therapy for decreased fluid intelligence with aging.

Abstract:The stimulative effect of supracutaneous electroacupuncture using a blunt-tip electrode on 120 points of human skin was observed in 12 healthy volunteers. A comparison of stimulation by the more expensive supracutaneous instrument specifically designed for this treatment and that of the more conventional transcutaneous electroacupuncture instrument, modified by use of a blunt-tip, belt-type electrode instead of the traditional electro-needle, showed similar therapeutic effects. An animal experiment, using the rat tail flick analgesia method to compare supracutaneous electroacupuncture, showed that the pain threshold was raised by both types of electroacupuncture, with both having an optimal stimulation time of 10–20 minutes. The percentage of change in maximum pain threshold was 206.6% for supracutaneous electroacupuncture at 7V and 175.4% for transcutaneous electroacupuncture at 2V.

Abstract:The authors studied 39 surgical patients suffering from abdominal illnesses. The patients were divided into acupuncture and control groups. In the acupuncture group, needles were inserted at acupuncture points Zusanli (St 36) and Sanyinjiao (Sp 6) during the second 12 hours following the operation. The patients were then observed to mark the time of the first passing of flatus. Sero-enzyme activity of glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) andγ-glutamyl transpeptidase (γ-GT) was determined before the operation, and measured at two day intervals from the 1st to 7th days after the operation. The results show the time of passing flatus in the acupuncture group (58.78±23.94 h) was obviously faster than that in the control group (86.14±20.43 h),P<0.001. This suggests acupuncture can promote intestinal activity. After operation, sero-enzyme activity was raised 200%–300% over the average pre-operation activity. This is evidence of trauma to the cells caused by the surgical procedure. This trauma caused the cells, directly or indirectly, to release enzymes into the blood. However, in those patients who received acupuncture therapy, sero-enzyme activity reduced to a normal level much faster. There is a possibility that acupuncture may be used to regulate reactivity of organisms experiencing trauma, and to promote repair of the damaged cells.

Abstract:In order to confirm the anti-carcinoma effect of 10% Brucea javanica emulsion, 68 cases of brain metastasis as a complication of lung cancer were randomly divided into 2 groups. One group was treated with radiotherapy alone, the other was treated with a combination of radiotherapy and intravenous injection of 10% Brucea javanica emulsion. The results showed that the median survival duration (15 months in the test group, 10 months in the control group) and the quality of life of the patients in the combined (test) group was much better than in the radiotherapy alone (control) group. The results suggest the 10% Brucea javanica emulsion exhibits a synergic action with the radiotherapy in the treatment of brain-metastasis as a complication of lung cancer.

Abstract:Ginseng is said to have beneficial effects on anemia. The proliferation effects of total saponins of Panax ginseng (TSPG) on hematopoietic progenitor cell in healthy individuals and 29 patients with aplastic anemia (AA) were observed through bone marrow cultures of burst forming unit-erythroid (BFU-E), colony forming unit-erythroid (CFU-E) and colony forming unit-granulocyte/macrophage (CFU-GM) in vitro compared with methyltestosterone (MT). The results suggest TSPG might prompt the proliferation of normal progenitor cells at a concentration of 20 µg/ml. The numbers of BFU-E,CFU-E and CFU-GM increased by 37.8±2.9%, 31.4±2.9% and 33.3±4.0% respectively overthe controls; furthermore TSPG was still useful to BFU-E, CFU-E growth without Epo in vitro, although the colony numbers were much lower. Otherwise MT was useless to CFU-GM. Of the 29 patients with AA, 14 who responded to MT showed sensitivity to TSPG in marrow culture (the rising rate of colony formation exceeded 30%), but immune-mediated AA (patient’s peripheral blood mononucleated cell suppressed normal hematopoiesis) and stem cell decreased AA (few of colonies were formed) showed almost no expression for TSPG activity because of the immunological suppression system and the absence of progenitors.

Abstract:The use of high dose cinobufocini in attenuation and treatment of infection and granulocytopenia during combined chemotherapy was observed in patients with malignant blood diseases. The study was designed in such a way that each patient served also as part of the control group. The test group included 18 males and 12 females, ranged in ages between 16 and 66 (averaged 34). Sixty-two experiments were run on 20 patients with acute leukemia, 8 with malignant lymphoma and 2 with multiple myeloma. The test group was treated with high dosages of cinobufocini. In each case, instances of infection were significantly decreased and the number of granulocytes was not markedly changed by the treatment. The results of this study suggest that high dosage cinobufocini therapy may significantly reduce the risk of infection and the degree and duration of granulocytopenia associated with chemotherapy for malignant blood diseases. Also, high dosage cinobufocini therapy is simple, convenient and causes little or no side effects.

Abstract:Herbal Medicines used to tonify Kidney and ameliorate the marrow microenvironment were applied in the treatment of 50 patients of aplastic anemia. Stanazol was also used to some cases. Forty-one cases (82.0%) responded well. It is significantly better than the 56.5% response among those treated with stanazol alone. Experimentally, the herbal medicines appear to stimulate hemopoietic progenitor cell proliferation, improve the marrow microenvironment and repair marrow damage induced by cyclophosphamide in vivo. The hemopoietic promoting effect might be partly due to the desialation of the marrow stroma cells. The herbal medicines also exert a positive effect on immune system by increasing leukocyte phagocytic activity and elevating the interleukin-2 production. Moreover, the decrease of superoxide dismutase resulting from cyclophosphamide injection could be reversed by the use of the herbal medicines. In conclusion, to tonify the Kidney and ameliorate marrow microenvironment medicines produce broad biological results that are beneficial to the body.

Abstract:The authors established experimental atherosclerosis in rabbits by means of combining hyperlipidemia and repeatedly administered intravenously with serum of other origins to make the immunopathologic injuries of arterial endothelia in order to observe the preventive and therapeutic effects of Chuanxiong on experimental atherosclerosis. The authors observed that Chuanxiong could significantly decrease the levels of the serum cholesterol and low density lipoprotein (P<0.05), and relieve the extent of atherosclerosis (P<0.05). In addition, Chuanxiong could reduce the red cell deformability. This study suggests that Chuanxiong plays an active role in preventive and therapeutic effect on atherosclerosis.

Abstract:The effects of Dachengqi decoction (DCQ) and rhubarb (Rb) on the spontaneous cellular electrical activities of guinea-pig taenia coli have been studied by intracellular microelectrode technique. DCQ and Rb both improve the depolarization of cell membrane, speed up the burst of slow wave and spike potentials (when the drug concentration was 1%,P>0.05, 10% or 20%,P<0.05), which were dose dependent. At the same concentration the effects of Rb were more significant than those of DCQ. These results suggest DCQ and Rb directly enhance the cellular electrical excitability so as to strengthen the contraction of the colon, is one of the mechanisms of the purgative action of these drugs at the cellular level. The ionic basis of the effects might be that DCQ and Rb reduce the K+ conductance of the cell membranes in a resting state.

Abstract:Coptis chinensis and the brain homogenate of rat were mixed and incubated to investigate the effects of Coptis on lipid peroxidation. The results showed that the malondialdehyde product of rat brain homogenate inhibited by 5% Coptis was significantly different from that of the control group (P<0.001). On the basis of the above-mentioned results, the effect of Coptis on lipid peroxidation and diabetes in rats induced by alloxan was investigated. The results showed: (1) The malondialdehyde product of both the pancreas and liver homogenate in the Coptis (test) group was significantly less than that in blank control and the alloxan (control) group (P<0.01,P<0.05). (2) Superoxide dismutases in erythrocytes activity was the same for all groups (P>0.50). (3) The blood catalase activity in the control group markedly decreased compared with the blank control group (P<0.05), but no significant change between the test and control group (P>0.05) occurred. (4) The value of serum glucose in the control group was significantly increased compared with the blank control group (P<0.05). A decrease in the value of serum glucose in the test group compared with the control group occurred, but with no significant difference between the two groups (P>0.05).
